Holly's Story - Go Dry Canada 2025

How your fundraising makes a difference

Holly Benson, a fundraising professional in her 50s, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012. Holly and her husband were on the cusp of retirement.

“I was shocked beyond belief. I thought, how could I have lung cancer? I’m a non-smoker, I’m active, and I eat healthily – cancer doesn’t happen to people like me.”

Holly was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012

After 33 days of radiation and chemotherapy, Holly received a clean report from her doctors and returned to work with a regular follow-up plan.

But just a few months later, Holly was driving when she suddenly lost vision in her right eye. She was taken to hospital where tests revealed that the cancer had not only returned to her lungs, it had spread to her brain, spine and liver.

Holly was given four months to live. She updated her will and started making funeral arrangements, down to the choice of music.

“One day my oncologist said, ‘There’s a new drug and you’re eligible. It’s not a panacea, it’s not a cure, but it’s going to extend your life and your quality of life'.”

Holly began a drug called Iressa, a pill taken at home that targets a genetic mutation in Holly’s form of lung cancer. After a few months, a check-up revealed that the tumours had shrunk and many had even disappeared.

While it’s not a cure, the drug has both extended Holly’s life and improved her quality of life. “Thanks to good drugs, thanks to good research, and the funding that supports research, I’ve got more time to plan and spend with my family.”

Holly proudly supports the work of the Canadian Cancer Society and encourages others to do the same. “When you donate to the Canadian Cancer Society, you’re helping fund the most promising research, which can save lives such as mine.”
